The media system of political journalism in Germany of the Early Modern Era was by no means an official entity. Rather, increasing autonomy developed based on a reciprocal relationship with the developmental processes. It profited from the broad availability of a steady flow of financial resources and thus remained independent of patronizing transfer benefits. Both publishers and editors interpreted the "agenda setting" according to their own criteria, motivated more by news value than by linguistic rules. The readers were at first only those who populated the court(yards) as well as the landed and upcoming learned men. In the 17th century, however, their influence spread until, in the course of the 18th century, even the unlearned came to show an interest.
Johannes Arndt, geboren 1957, absolvierte Lehramtsstudien der Geschichte, Chemie und der Evangelischen Theologie. Er ist Apl. Professor für Neuere Geschichte an der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Forschungsschwerpunkt: Verfassungs-, Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit.
The extent of journalistic activity concerning both domestic and interterritorial conflicts of the Old Reich has to date not been properly treated – in contrast to the many works describing international relations or political and philosophic questions of the day. Here, the author studies the role the public media played in the development of the political processes that existed between the two imperial estates. It also questions the previous paradigms of “arcana imperii” – the closed-circuit paths of information in Baroque courts. The self-perception of the ruler in all its ceremonial glory is shown in a new and very nuanced light.>
