Four years after the first volume, we can now present the second and final work on Biographies. It focuses on the lives of 20 classical archaeologists born between 1864 and 1905, including many famous exponents of the discipline. The book begins with a preface by the editors and ends with a comprehensive index of persons and terms appearing in both volumes. We have deliberately decided not to organise this work in terms of the history of one particular institution, and neither is it a biographical dictionary. Rather, we aimed to provide a representative sample of different kinds of life plans and behaviours exhibited by archaeologists living and working under a totalitarian regime. The book hence juxtaposes staunch exponents of national socialist and fascist ideologies and those who used any opportunity for non-conforming behaviours and opposition, as well as scholars who were persecuted and disenfranchised and many more who acted in ambivalent and inconsistent ways. Once again, most of the persons discussed in our work are from German-speaking countries, but compared to the first volume we have significantly increased the number of foreign archaeologists.
