After nearly two decades of multipartydemocracy in Tanzania, a clear indication ofdemocratic reversals is more evident. The oppositionparties, the parliament, electoral commissions, institutions of accountability, civil societyorganizations, and the media have remained weak toenvisage democracy. This book contains an in-depthand rigorous analysis of the factors contributing toand militating against democracy in Tanzania. Usinga state-party fusion thesis, the book provides adeeper understanding of democratization by examiningthe institutions and behaviour of political actorsas well as historical and contemporary dynamics intoa theoretical framework that underscores theanomalies, dilemmas and paradoxes in practicingdemocracy. It argues that the ruling party isa State-Party in its own right and hencesuffocates the political space for other actors toplay their roles. The book breaks a new ground byproviding thoughtful provoking insights intodemocracy in a country from the developing world. The work will be of interests to scholars andpractitioners of politics.
