Features the garden tractors that span from a mid-1930s Gravely Model L and Swiss-built Simar Rototiller to machines from the mid-60s such as Crawley, Winget, Ransomes MG 40 and David Brown 2D.
Among old favourites there is a range of Trusty tractors, as well as examples of British Anzani, BMB, Rowtrac and Howard Rotavator. More unusual machines include the Wrigley Motor-hoe (with its engine inside the wheel), Auto Culto Midget and Newman WD2. Together, the fifty models are a representative sample of the varied and interesting pedestrian-controlled and ride-on garden tractors that took market gardening out of the era of the spade and horse. The video was recorded at Vintage Horticultural and Garden Machinery Club working days with all the machines in action ploughing, cultivating or preparing a seedbed. The video is fully scripted by Brian Bell, author of the standard reference book, "Fifty Years of Garden Machinery", also published by Old Pond.

A Norfolk farmer's son, Brian played a key role in developing agricultural education in Suffolk from the 1950s onwards. For many years he was the vice-principal of the Otley Agricultural College having previously headed the agricultural engineering section. He established the annual 'Power in Action' demonstrations in which the latest farm machinery is put through its paces and he campaigned vigorously for improved farm safety, serving for many years on the Suffolk Farm Safety Committee. He is secretary of the Suffolk Farm Machinery Club. In 1993 he retired from Otley College and was created a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his services to agriculture. He is secretary and past chairman of the East Anglian branch of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers. Brian's writing career began in 1963 with the publication of Farm Machinery in Cassell's 'Farm Books' series. In 1979 Farming Press published a new version of Farm Machinery, which is now in its fourth enlarged edition. Brian's involvement with videos began in 1995 when he compiled and scripted Classic Farm Machinery. Brian Bell writes on farm machinery past and present for Farmers Guide and Tractor & Machinery magazines. Brian lives in Suffolk with his wife Ivy. They have three sons.
