Phytotherapy offers a favourable benefit/risk quotient. This and other factors make it eminently suitable for paediatrics. As only some of the many diseases of infants and young children can be effectively treated by it, the book is intended not as an alternative but as a long overdue addition to the chemical armamentarium. 14 indications for external application and 30 for internal use are discussed, carefully outlining potential usefulness and limits and taking account of the clinical experience of several paediatricians. Apart from many formulations for individually dispensed preparations, a list of tried and tested proprietary preparations is given at the end of each chapter. Special emphasis is placed on the pharmaceutical quality of preparations made from medicinal herbs.
The book offers drug-legislation and scientific backing through frequent reference to the Commission E Monographs. 100 Commission E Monographs and 15 ESCOP Monographs are given in full in the last chapter. They offer not only valuable, detailed information but make the book a general handbook of phytotherapy, including many aspects relating to areas of medicinal use for adults.
