To fully understand all aspects of the Accent Method (AM) of voice therapy, the author begins with a review of the pathophysiological model of voice disorders and the aetiological classification of these disorders. This is an important prerequisite to better understand the indications and uses of the AM of voice therapy. The importance of the detailed assessment of the voice disorder prior to proper management is stressed. An outline of the suggested protocol of assessment is provided. Other management techniques for voice disorders are mentioned and briefly presented to give clinicians a clearer perspective of the AM as part of their clinical arsenal. The introductory chapters are followed by a detailed description of the rationale and methodology of the Accent Method. The various considerations regarding the practical application of the AM are also discussed. An audiotape with a sample of the basic accent exercises serves as a practical demonstration of the Accent Method to ensure its proper utilization.
