This study asks a fundamental theoretical and empirical question--re-posing and re-contextualizing in the context of Sub-Saharan Africa: can markets generate the institutions on which they depend for their effectiveness, or do these require the active intervention of a strong, purposeful and democratic state?
Robert Dingwall is a consulting sociologist and part-time Professor of Sociology at Nottingham Trent University. Natewindé Sawadogo is a founding member of the Laboratoire de Recherche Interdisciplinaire en Science Sociales et Santé (LARISS), in the Department of Sociology at the University of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso).
