This reference work provides a comprehensive and modern approach to the imaging of numerous non-traumatic and traumatic emergency conditions affecting the human body. It reviews the latest imaging techniques, related clinical literature, and appropriateness criteria/guidelines, while also discussing current controversies in the imaging of acutely ill patients.

The first chapters outline an evidence-based approach to imaging interpretation for patients with acute non-traumatic and traumatic conditions, explain the role of Artificial Intelligence in emergency radiology, and offer guidance on when to consult an interventional radiologist in vascular as well as non-vascular emergencies. The next chapters describe specific applications of Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, radiography, Multi-Detector Computed Tomography (MDCT), and Dual-Energy Computed Tomography for the imaging of common and less common acute brain, spine, thoracic, abdominal, pelvic and musculoskeletal conditions, including the unique challenges of imaging pregnant, bariatric and pediatric patients.

Written by a group of leading North American and European Emergency and Trauma Radiology experts, this book will be of value to emergency and general radiologists, to emergency department physicians and related personnel, to obstetricians and gynecologists, to general and trauma surgeons, as well as trainees in all of these specialties.

Michael N. Patlas, MD, FRCPC, FASER,FCAR, FSAR, is a Professor of Radiology and Emergency/Trauma Imaging Section Chief in the Department of Radiology, McMaster University. He is an Editor-in-Chief for Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal and five radiology books, author of over 150 peer-reviewed papers, editorials and book chapters, Vice President of Canadian Emergency, Trauma and Acute Care Radiology Society, Program Committee Chair for Canadian Association of Radiologists, and honored fellow of the American Society of Emergency Radiology, the Canadian Association of Radiologists, and the Society of Abdominal Radiology. Dr. Douglas S. Katz is Vice Chair for Research at NYU (New York University) Langone Hospital - Long Island and Professor of Radiology at the NYU Long Island School of Medicine (on the Scholar Track - Clinical Arm). He has held essentially the same position since 1999, and has been an attending at what was formerly Winthrop-University Hospital since 1996. With over 900 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts, and multiple books, syllabi, book chapters, and other publications. He has held a variety of positions in organized academic radiology regionally, nationally, and internationally over his three decade career, and has been awarded top honors from his hospital and medical school, and has been Attending of the Year six times, two of which for internal medicine (although he is board certified only in diagnostic radiology). With diverse interests and extensive writing and reviewing and editorial experience, his focus since residency has been on various aspects of emergency radiology, as well as on cross-sectional imaging in general. Professor Mariano Scaglione, MD, FASER, FESER, FESGAR, EDER Mariano Scaglione is an Associate Professor of Radiology at the University of Sassari, Honorary Professor at Tesside University and Consultant Radiologist at the James Cook University Hospital at Middlesbrough, UK. He was the Chairman for the Emergency Radiology Subcommittee for ECR in 2012, President of the Italian College of Emergency Radiology SIRM (2010-2014) and ESER President (2015-2017). He has been a member of the Emergency Radiology subcommittee of the Scientific Program for RSNA (2012-2018). He is a seasoned speaker having delivered more than 150 presentations at international meetings and published author, publishing more than 160 papers, editing 12 books and was the primary author for 32 book chapters. He was also appointed Lead Editor for the Emergency Radiology Trilogy books and his article "Role of contrast-enhanced helical CT in the evaluation of acute thoracic aortic injuries" is one of the most cited articles in the EurRadiol Journal in the last 25 years. He is an Editorial Board Member in many Radiology journals including "Emergency Radiology" the official journal of the ASER since 2005. He was awarded the "Gold Medal" 2014 and Honorary Member 2019 for ESER.
