Based on the authors' qualitative study of a diverse group of 51 widowers, this book sets widowhood within the context of life experience. It identifies characteristics and patterns of behavior that contribute to widower's success, as well as lack of success, in adjusting satisfactorily to their circumstances.

Alinde Moore is chair and associate professor in the Department of Psychology at Ashland University, where she has taught since 1985. She has chaired the department since 1989. She earned her MS at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, and her PhD in educational psychology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her doctoral dissertation involved a 5-year qualitative study of the coping skills of poor elderly women trying to live as independently as possible in their own homes. In Ashland, Ohio, she helped found the local hospice, served on the local hospice board for eight years, and served on the state hospice board for three years. She continues to help train hospice volunteers.
