Examining the nature of change which is transmitted in nerve, the author, A. V. Hill enlists the help of chemists, engineers, and physicists to explain this scientific problem.
The author, a physiologist, in giving the Liversidge lecture for 'the encouragement of research in chemistry', chose for his subject one in which the help of chemists as well as engineers and physicists is an essential condition of advance. It is his earnest hope that as a result of this book a chemist may come to the aid of physiologists in one of the most difficult and attractive scientific problems; the nature of the change that is transmitted in nerve.
