A survey of traditional Balinese style is enhanced by examples of its adaptation in modern private houses and boutique hotel architecture, including the celebrated Amandari, Four Seasons Bali at Jimbaran, and Wijaya’s studio-compound Villa Bebek. As well as Wijaya’s own archive photographs, the book is illustrated with the work of internationally acclaimed specialist photographers Tim Street-Porter, Luca Invernizzi Tettoni, Guide Alberto Rossi and Rio Helmi, plus drawings by Chang Huai-Yan, Deni Chung and Bruce Granquist.

Made Wijaya (1953–2016) was a renowned landscape architect and a passionate advocate of Balinese culture. He wrote many books on Balinese architecture and costume as well as on tropical garden design.
