This book highlights the failure theories and evaluation techniques of thermal barrier coatings, covering the thermal-mechanical–chemical coupling theories, performance and damage characterization techniques, and related evaluations. Thermal barrier coatings are the key thermal protection materials for high-temperature components in advanced aeroengines. Coating spallation is a major technical bottleneck faced by researchers. The extremely complex microstructure, diverse service environments, and failure behaviors bring challenges to the spallation analysis in terms of the selective use of mechanical theories, experimental methods, and testing platforms. In the book, the authors provide a systematic summary of the latest research and technological advances and present their insights and findings in the past couple of decades. This book is not only suitable for researchers and engineers in thermal barrier coatings and related fields but also a good reference for upper-undergraduate and postgraduate students of materials science and mechanics majors.

Dr. Yichun Zhou is Professor in the School of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, Xidian University. He received his Ph.D. in mechanics in the Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1994. He also serves as Chairman of the 7th Physical Mechanics Committee of Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and Standing Council Member of Chinese Materials Research Society. His research focuses on failure mechanics of thermal barrier coatings and the preparation and performance of ferroelectric memory. He received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China in 2005. Dr. Li Yang is Professor of the School of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, Xidian University. She serves as Vice Chairman of the 8th Physical Mechanics Committee of Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and Standing Council Member and Vice Secretary General of Youth Committee of Chinese Materials Research Society. Her research focuses on the design, preparation and mechanical behaviour study of high-/ultrahigh-temperature coatings for aerospace applications. She was appointed the Yangtze River Distinguished Professorship in 2021. Dr. Wang Zhu is Professor of the College of Materials Science and Engineering, Xiangtan University. His research focuses on mechanical characterization and failure mechanisms study of thermal barrier coatings.
