Comprehensive and in-depth, the book covers the regimental flags of the major combatants in the two major wars for North American in the eighteenth century. The flags cover regiments from Britain, France, Germany, and Spain. This has long been a subject surrounded by myth, legend, and inaccuracy, and the last “standard” work is more than a hundred years old. Hill digs deep to correct old errors and assembles a complete record of flags, drawing from archives and artifacts, and creates a reference that will stand the test of time—not only during the coming 250th anniversary years, but far beyond.
Steven Hill is a nationally recognized expert on military flags and colors, with more than forty years of experience in the field. He has served as curator of the flag collections for the State of Delaware and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and as associate curator of military flag collections for Indiana. A member of the Company of Military Collectors and Historians, Hill is proprietor and flag-maker of DuPont Military Flag Company, which has made reproduction flags for the Smithsonian, the United States Military and Naval Academies, the Pentagon, the Pennsylvania State Capitol, Harvard University, numerous Civil War battlefields (including Vicksburg, Chickamauga, and Petersburg), Ford’s Theater, Mount Vernon, Fort Ligonier, the movie Last of the Mohicans, and hundreds of military reenactments. He lives in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
