Providing a pragmatic approach to changing Internet protocols, this book introduces the SOCKS standard (Simple Solutions to Complex Problems). The SOCKS standard was originally developed as a generic proxy protocol, making it possible for network administrators to simply limit access to the Internet. The authors describe how to use an existing solution to problems within the Internet that would reduce rather than increase the complexity of an already complex system. The authors describe how to build a SOCKS-based solution as well as the tradeoffs with other approaches, such as IPv6.

Karl-Andre' Skevik has done research on operating systems, video streaming, and future networks. He received a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Oslo in 2007, and is one of the original developers of the Dante SOCKS software package. Michael Shuldman has worked on UNIX and embedded systems since 1995, working both in companies doing medical research, as well as companies producing state of the art carrier grade optical network hardware.

Introduction. The potential of SOCKS. Implementations. Network Address Translation. Virtual Private Network. Application-level routing. Network mobility and space exploration. Network monitoring. Client simplification. Server simplification.
