Since the first edition of this book was published in 2004, to much acclaim, the pace of innovation in the field of skin metrology has increased and various new technologies have become available. This new, revised edition  reflects these advances by presenting the current theory and practice of noninvasive investigation and measurement of the skin and its appendices in health and disease.

The first, extensive part of this authoritative work is devoted to the physiology and metrology of the various structural components of the skin. Skin functions and their measurement are then discussed in detail, with sections on mechanical protection, photoprotection, barrier function, immune function, thermoregulation, and sensory function. In addition, careful consideration is given to skin disease rating and skin maps, and a unique list of physical and biological constants and units is provided.

Not only is this new edition the first comprehensive, practical handbook in this domain - it will also serve as a manual of skin physiology and collates anatomical, functional, and physical quantitative data that would otherwise be arduous to retrieve because of their dispersal throughout the literature. It will prove a valuable resource for dermatologists, cosmetologists, bioengineers, physiologists, pharmacists, and all others who deal with the skin in their work.

Philippe Humbert is Professor of Dermatology and Head of both the Dermatology Department at Besançon University Hospital Center and the Center’s Cutaneous Engineering and Biology Laboratory. Professor Humbert has a range of other responsibilities, including as President of the European Society of Cosmetic and Aesthetic Dermatology, a Member of the Scientific Council of the European Cosmetology and Dermatology Journal, and a Member of the Board of Directors of the French Society of Angiology. He is also a Past-President of the International Society for Biophysics and Imaging of the Skin (2005–2010) and co-founder of the French-Speaking Skin Engineering Society (Société Francophone d'Ingénierie Cutanée). Professor Humbert has an impressive publication record on a range of topics in dermatology.Ferial Fanian gained her MD from the Shahrekord University of Medical Sciences, Shahrekord, Iran. She subsequently undertook a Research Fellowship in Dermatology at the Center for Research and Training in Skin Diseases and Leprosy at Tehran University of Medical Sciences and a Fellowship in Aesthetic and Laser Dermatology (inter-university diploma). She is in the process of completing her PhD in Dermatology at the University of Franche-Comté, Besançon, France. Dr. Fanian is a Board Member of the ICNI Group – French Society of Dermatology and a Member of the International Society of Dermatology, the Laser Group of the French Society of Dermatology, the European Society for Laser Dermatology, the Iran Medical Laser Society, and the Iran Medical Council.Howard I. Maibach is Professor of Dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco. He is a leading authority in the fields of dermatotoxicology and dermatopharmacology, in which he has conducted much original research and written very extensively, with a total of more than 2,500 publications as lead or co-author. Professor Maibach has served on the editorial boards of more than 30 scientific journals and is a member of many professional societies, including the American Academy of Dermatology and the International Commission on Occupational Health. He has also been the recipient of numerous honors, both within the United States and overseas.
