Austrian troops played a part in almost every major campaign of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. Austria was probably Napolean's most implacable enemy and, after France, fielded the most formidable army of the period. The troops were recruited from territories as diverse as modern Belgium, the Czech Republic, central Romania and northern Italy, along with volunteers from southern Germany and a few Irishmen. This volume looks at the life and experience of both the ordinary infantry and the veteran elite of the Grenadier battalions, covering everything from their basic training to the horrors of the battlefield.

David Hollins in addition to an expert on the Austrian army of this period is a fluent German speaker and has spent a number of years researching this subject in the original archives. Jeff Burn is an experienced military illustrator with a reputation for exhaustive attention to detail. His previous titles for Osprey include Warrior 2 Waffen SS Soldier 1940-45 and MAA 233 French Army 1870-71 Franco-Prussian War (1) Imperial Troops.
