The dean of Las Vegas bookmakers takes readers behind the sportsbook counter for a deep look at sports-betting wise guys and whales, crooked casino owners, point-shaving players and bribed referees, and the battle for control of the industry.
Take an inside look at the history of sports betting in Las Vegas!

In his first job as a sportsbook director, Art Manteris--the youngest sports-betting executive in Nevada history--stumbled upon a scam that involved organized crime's systematic shredding of Las Vegas' most prestigious sports book from the inside. Manteris also had to fend off sports-betting whales, guard against smart-money wise guys, beware of point-shaved games and crooked referees, and fight back against sore losers who tried to get him fired in revenge. While he protected the integrity of the games, he also had to balance the books under the intense scrutiny of his casino bosses and Gaming regulators, as well as deal with the ferocious competition of offshore sports-betting websites.

The dean of Las Vegas bookmakers takes readers behind the sportsbook counter for a deep look at sports betting and the battle for control of the industry. Manteris also ushers readers into his own living room for the inside story of how being on the hook for millions of dollars every day of the year alters one's perspective on everything from parenting and family to religion.

Art Manteris is the dean of Las Vegas bookmakers. A Pittsburgh native, he attended college in Las Vegas then became one of the youngest sportsbook directors in the city at Caesars Palace in the mid-1980s. He later moved on to become a vice president at the Las Vegas Hilton, where he designed the modern theater-style "superbook." Approaching his 40th year in Las Vegas, Manteris is now the vice president of Station Casinos' sports books. David Purdum has covered the sports-betting industry for nearly a decade, including stops at ESPN, The Sporting News, and Sports Business Journal. He approached SuperBookie 2, his first book, with an open mind, ready to learn about all sides of the eternal battle between bookies and bettors.
