This guide covers all the essential topics novice judges need to know, such as: the expertise and temperament needed to be a horse show judge; getting started; the mechanics of judging; working with other horse show officials; and coping with unhappy exhibitors.
As equestrian competitions at all levels increase in popularity so has the call for qualified horse show judges. "Horse Show Jumping for Beginners" covers all the essential topics novice judges need to know: the expertise and temperament needed to be a horse show judge; getting started - mock and learner judging, license requirements and application procedures; finding judging assigments at recognized schooling, discipline and breed, and intercollegiate horse shows; the mechanics of judging - the basic requirements of each English and Western discipline or breed, "bookkeeping" or how to keep track of a class and use scorekeeping symbols; working with other horse show officials; and coping with unhappy exhibitors. Drawing on the author's own experiences and including instructive hints and lively anecdotes from other top horse show officials, "Horse Show Judging for Beginners" should be the first stop for any prospective judge's way to the English or Western show ring.

Hallie McEvoy is a USA Equestrian (formerly AHSA)-licensed recorded judge in hunter and hunter seat equitation. She is the author of the acclaimed Showing for Beginners (page 162).
