1968 is the year that all railway enthusiasts remember, mostly mournfully as this was the year in which the last standard gauge steam locomotive was to run on British Railways. Of course preserved steam has since been allowed back on the national network on selected lines.

1968 is the year that all railway enthusiasts remember, mostly mournfully as this was the year in which the last standard gauge steam locomotive was to run on British Railways. Of course preserved steam has since been allowed back on the national network on selected lines, but back then this was the end and the few remaining locos were hunted down and photographed, travelled behind and if possible cleaned!
