Preface This time the biennial international European Metallurgical Conference, the fourth since its incipience in the year 2001, is being organized in the city of Düsseldorf, from June 11 to June 14, 2007. – This year’s Conference site and date were selected, to make it coincide with the quadrennial tradefair Metec, the major international metallurgical technology exhibition, and the associated tradeshows Gifa (Foundry Technology), Thermprocess (Industrial Heat Treatment Technology) and Newcast (Casting Products and Applications). The German Conference Organizer, GDMB, the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, Resource and Environmental Technology, expects from the decision of this combination synergetic effects, providing the Conference delegates in addition the opportunity to learn about the latest developments on the market in the field of metallurgical processing and manufacturing. – During EMC 2007, there will be presented in 5 parallel sessions during the 3 days of the Conference, around 160 papers on multiple subjects of interest, relating to the winning of non-ferrous metals, manufacturing and their applications, as well as on sustainable technologies and sustainability issues in the non-ferrous metals industry. The response of invited key people from industry and academic institutions to speak about the wide spectrum of sustainability items was overwhelming and GDMB is proud to be able to address actual topics on the widely diversified aspects of sustainability in the EMC Conference program. – Not only the fact that the papers do originate from about 40 countries over the world, but also the constellation of the Plenary Session of EMC 2007 highlight the international character of this Conference. In the 12 Plenary Sessions, renowned Speakers representing all continents will outline worldwide developments not only of actual interest and but also of concern, thereby bringing forward to the audience the achievements, trends and evolution in their respective countries and regions of the world. – Conference internationality is of prime concern to GDMB, in order to maximize exchange of ideas and enhance distribution of know-how and technological development to the benefit of the delegates. The comprehensive support of Eurométaux to the EMC 07, as in the preceding EMC Conferences, underlines the conformity of policies of this most important European Industry Organization also in terms of enhancement of the European international profile in the globalizing world. – The Conference delegates and the international community will have in the 4 volumes of the EMC 2007 Proceedings the opportunity to evaluate in detail in the peer reviewed manuscripts what the presenters already outlined in their speeches. Our peer reviewers took time and made sure that quality of content of the manuscripts is relevant and of genuine interest, whereas the GDMB staff, together with the Scientific Committee, took care about the uniformity of their publication. As with the former EMC Conferences, plenary paper manuscripts are published in the worldwide circulated GDMB Journal, Erzmetall – World of Metallurgy, of which the first five are appearing in the May-June 2007 issue, available at the Conference. –Thanks are expressed firstly to the presenters of the papers and authors of the manuscripts, to the chairpersons of the 40 sessions, to the many manuscript peer reviewers, to the individual members of the EMC Committees, as well as to the GDMB Staff who did realize these Proceedings and, last not least, to the Cosponsoring Societies for their invaluable material and organizational assistance, and the Company Sponsors for their financial support to the Conference. – GDMB looks forward that this EMC 2007 meeting be an enjoyable, fruitful but, above all, an interesting venue to the Conference participants and Companions in the not-less interesting surroundings of the city of Düsseldorf within the background atmosphere of the coinciding metallurgical tradefares.
