The Hotspur ferry boats that plied the passage between Hythe and Southampton during the post war years still, half a century after their heyday, evoke strong memories and are spoken of with incredible fondness. They were a part of the growing up of those of us of a “certain age”. Despite the oily smell and the diesel fumes, the warmth generated through the engine hatch was a magnet on cold winter days. The chugging sound of the engines is still as vivid as any popular song of the time. The Hotspurs have sadly passed into history but their memory is very much alive.
