Describes the basic concepts, building blocks and applications of magnetic microsystems, or Mag-MEMS, which exploit the formidable assets provided by electromagnetic interactions at the sub-mm scale.
This book describes the basic concepts, building blocks and applications of magnetic microsystems, or Mag-MEMS, which exploit the formidable assets provided by electromagnetic interactions at the sub-mm scale. Part I develops both elementary and advanced concepts of magnetic actuation, as well as scale reduction laws which favor magnet-to-magnet interactions, admissible current density in conductors, and diamagnetism. Part II exposes a state-of-the-art review of the currently available building blocks and their fabrication process, covering magnets and coils principally, but also other ferromagnetic and exotic materials. Part III details specific prototypes of Mag-MEMS (both from Grenoble and elsewhere), and their potential applications in various fields (motors, generators, bio-medical, suspensions, optics, etc.). Finally, Part IV introduces the design and optimization of Mag-MEMS, as well as dedicated power electronics. All three editors form the core of the Mag-MEMS research team at LEG/G2E-Lab in Grenoble, which they direct and manage together. This book is based on their combined experience and that of their co-workers.
