Assuring Nuclear Safety at the Design Stage of Nuclear Power Plants is the second volume in a set of titles that analyses the full spectrum of nuclear safety. An efficient and safe design requires a solid grounding in regulatory fundamentals and best practices, as well a comprehensive understanding of the safety systems that can be incorporated into the design. Beginning with an introduction to the importance of assuring safety at the design stage, the book discusses management systems for plant designs and the concept of defence-in-depth. Subsequent chapters then comprehensively review fundamental safety functions, including step-by-step guidance for carrying out safety assessments at design stage. Designing for an emergency is also discussed, and the book concludes with a case study on the design changes required after the Fukushima accident. Other case studies and real-world examples are included throughout.Assuring Nuclear Safety at the Design Stage of Nuclear Power Plants bridges the gap between foundational knowledge and practical applications in nuclear safety, and is an essential resource for students, researchers, regulators, design engineers and operators within the nuclear energy sector.

From 1984 – 1988, Dr Dusic was the Chief Nuclear Safety Inspector in Slovenia. During this period he led the initiative to create the first independent regulatory body in the region which was then formed in 1987. From 1988 – 2012 he worked in the IAEA Department of Nuclear Safety, responsible for the development of safety standards in the field of nuclear safety, education of nuclear professionals worldwide (more than 100 training courses and workshops), was leading various IAEA safety review teams (OSART, ASSET, ASCOT) and provided assistance to embarking countries through the IAEA Technical Cooperation projects. In 2021 he retired holding the position P5 of the Senior Safety Assessment Specialist. From 2012 until now, he is the owner and director of Nuccon GmbH (www.nuccon.eu) involved in safety assessments of design changes at Krsko NPP, the EU NARSIS Research Project and education of the EU Clearinghouse members in nuclear safety matters.
